The organ was originally built as a 3 manual by J Binns of Leeds. In 1913, this was expanded to 4 manuals by Compton who rebuilt the organ in 1932 which included the addition of a Tuba stop and the present detached stopkey console.

In more recent years, the organ has been overhauled and a new electrical system fitted.
