The organ here at St Peter's in Halliwell, Bolton is a typical example of the kind of work Compton were doing in the final years before they ceased pipe organ building.

Originally built by Cole & Son and installed in 1843 in the west gallery, it was later moved to the north transept in 1880.

In 1960 the organ was rebuilt Compton which saw the original tracker action replaced by electro-pneumatic and the present detached stopkey console added as well as various tonal changes and additions.

In 1984 the organ was rebuilt by Pendlebury of Cleveleys which saw some pipework from the organ at St Matthew's Church in Bolton incorporated into the instrument.

Most recently in 2010, a new solid-state electric action replaced the original Compton action.
