The organ was built in 1931 by Compton to replace an earlier instrument from 1907 by Garrard. About 11 stops from the Garrard instrument were used.

The organ is built on the extension technique with 38 ranks of pipes fully enclosed in 3 chambers (with the exception of the Tuba) housed behind an ornamental grille designed by Giles Gilbert Scott and carved by Ferdinand Stuflesser of Ortesei. The console, which is one of the few instruments left to retain the Compton patent luminous stop control, is made from timber from HMS Bellerophon, which transported Napoleon after the Battle of Waterloo.
