Job number: A162

The present organ was built in 1932 by Compton and incorporates pipework from a previous instrument built by William Gray in 1825.  About 10 of the Compton ranks are thought to come from an instrument that Compton built for A H Midgley in 1921.  Midgley himself was a business partner to Compton for a short period.

The organ still features the distinctive Compton console with the patent luminous stop control system. The organ also has the Compton patent 32ft polyphonic bass and, like most Compton instruments, is built using the extension principal with all pipework totally enclosed. At a later date a 2 manual console (known as the 'East console') was installed in the choir area.
